What is Non-Verbal Reasoning?
Non-verbal reasoning involves answering problem solving questions that appear in diagrammatic or pictorial form. Non-verbal reasoning tests allow potential to be measured as complex problems can be solved without relying upon or being limited by language skills. As these types of questions don’t require reading they can give a valuable insight into the abilities of those who have difficulty with reading and thinking verbally. Before we attempt to teach children how to solve non-verbal reasoning questions we ensure that all the preliminary foundation steps are in place and firmly embedded so that children can analyse and solve complex problems. What is Verbal Reasoning?
Verbal reasoning is understanding and reasoning using concepts framed in words. It aims at evaluating the ability to think constructively, rather than at simple fluency or vocabulary recognition. There are 21 main types of questions that tend to appear in the exams which can be classified into 3 main groups which are: • Vocabulary Questions • Arithmetic Questions • Codes Questions Most children are able to get to grips with these question types, however the true challenge lies in being able to perform accurately under tight time conditions. Of the three different groups of questions it’s the vocabulary questions that present the biggest challenge. Your child needs to have a very thorough grasp of a wide range of vocabulary. Knowledge of homophones and homonyms is essential. At Slough 11 Plus Tutors we have a systematic and structured approach to teaching vocabulary. Vocabulary is taught in a fun and engaging fashion, our children develop an intrigue for language which is always taught in context so that understanding is enhanced and maintained. In order to answer the arithmetic questions your child needs to be apply the skills of rapid recall. Your child will learn to answer 40 quick fire questions in one minute. This standard will ensure that your child is able to apply the skills to solving the arithmetic questions. Of three different types of verbal reasoning questions, the codequestions are the easiest. Children need to answer accurately and quickly. We have a range of techniques in place so that children master the codes questions so that our time is spent developing vocabulary.
Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning Yr 5
All of our Year 5 courses are taught by experienced qualified teachers who are CRB check with a fully enhanced disclosure. Certificates are available for inspection. All of our teachers are current members of the General Teaching Council. We teach every type of verbal reasoning question including challenging questions that involve reading information to solve questions about logic and problem solving. All non verbal reasoning questions styles are taught. We ensure that the more challenging questions are made visual so that your child not only understands the questions but the skill, concept and ability to observe closely is applied to other questions. We will provide the questions needed so that precise targeted further practice is in place.
Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning Yr 4
All of our Year 4 courses are taught by experienced qualified teachers who are CRB checked with a fully enhanced disclosure. Certificates are available for inspection. All of our teachers are current members of the General Teaching Council. We offer Year 4 classes whereby we develop children’s understanding and range of vocabulary. We ensure that children are up to speed with the mental mathematics required for the verbal reasoning part of the 11+ exam. Your child will be able to answer 40 questions in 1 minute. We ensure that your child is fully versed in all aspects of spatial awareness so that these essential skills are in place, ready to tackle all the non-verbal reasoning types of questions.
